How to Reduce Email Spam: A Safe Cleanup Plan
Once an address is circulating, there is no button that makes every unwanted message disappear. The useful approach is slower but safer: sort recognised marketing from unknown spam and phishing, handle each one differently, and stop using the same high-value address for every future signup.
First, classify the message

The US Federal Trade Commission recommends using provider filters, marking unwanted messages as spam and blocking addresses or domains where appropriate. Its consumer spam guidance is a useful baseline because it does not promise that one unsubscribe click will solve every category.
A newsletter from a shop you recognise can use the mailbox provider's unsubscribe button. A surprise “parcel fee due” from a misspelled domain gets reported as phishing. A real-looking bank alert is checked in the banking app, not through the email. Three messages, three actions—because the inbox does not award points for clicking fastest.
1. Report unknown spam instead of interacting
Use the provider's “Report spam” or “Report phishing” action. That moves the message out of the inbox and supplies a classification signal without opening a link in the message. Deleting alone removes one copy but gives the filter less information. Do not reply to ask an unknown sender to stop, and do not download an attachment to inspect it.
2. Unsubscribe safely from senders you recognise
For a legitimate newsletter or store you previously used, prefer the unsubscribe control shown by Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail or another trusted mailbox interface. Those controls can rely on the standard List-Unsubscribe header rather than an arbitrary link in the message body. 3. Build filters around stable evidence
Filters are most useful when they target something harder for a sender to rotate. Route recognised newsletters by mailing-list header or recipient alias. Move receipts using a known domain and subject pattern. If one unique alias begins receiving unrelated mail, filter that exact recipient value or disable the alias. Avoid broad rules such as deleting every message containing “sale”; they eventually catch legitimate receipts and security notices.
4. Use one address per relationship when possible
A plus-tag or forwarding alias makes the recipient address itself a diagnostic clue. 6. Remove unnecessary public exposure
Search old profiles, forum posts, code repositories and contact pages for your address. Replace public personal addresses with a contact form or a role address you can rotate. For a domain you control, use a dedicated public contact address instead of the mailbox that resets your important accounts. Obfuscating an address with spaces may deter the simplest scraper, but it is not a durable privacy control.
7. Treat a sudden spam increase as a possible breach signal
A leaked address can lead to more than advertising. Attackers may combine it with old passwords or send targeted phishing that names the breached service. If volume rises suddenly, check reputable breach notifications, change any reused password and enable multi-factor authentication on the primary mailbox. 8. Separate high-value and public identities
Keep the address used for banking, password recovery and identity services away from newsletters and public profiles. Use stable aliases for ongoing lower-trust relationships and a separate mailbox where independent storage is useful. 9. Give the cleanup two weeks
